Lodewijk Mortelmans is known as a composer of small treasures - piano miniatures and especially art songs. It is not without reason that his colleague, Paul Gilson, called him "the prince of the Flemish art song". The fact that he composed a series of orchestral works and an opera is often overlooked because of this well deserved title.

The painting on the cover"Fishing Boats at Dusk" is by Lodewijk's brother Frans Mortelmans. Frans presented it his brother on the occasion of the première of Lodewijk's opera "The Children of the Sea" at the Antwerp Royal Flemish Opera in 1920.

1. Daybreak and Sunrise from the opera "Children of the Sea" (1915)

2. Mignon-Lied (Kennst du das Land) (1906)  for soprano and orchestra

3.Morning Mood (1922) - symphonic poem

4.Helios (1894) - symphonic poem

5.In Memoriam - Elegy I (1917) - symphonic poem

6. Myth of Spring (1895) - symphonic poem

Performers:

Nina Stemme, soprano

Flemish Radio Choir conducted by Peter Burian

Flemish Radio Orchestra conducted by Zsolt Hamar

BRTN Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Fernand Terby

I am absolutely thrilled with this cd. Why such lovely music is not better known puzzles me. I especially like the second work for soprano and orchestra. This is in my view a masterpiece (Michael Cattermole - Great Brittain)
