De Jong's style was deeply influenced by the old church modes and by jazz, and in his later life by the old Dutch folk songs. But above all he was a very sensitive and delicate impressionist. De Jong wrote operas, oratorios, symphonies, symphonic poems, concertos for various instruments, chamber music (including six string quartets), works for piano, songs and religious music.
De Jong's portrait is painted by the Flemish Wim van Remortel, honorari professor of the National Higher Institute for Fine Arts in Antwerp, Doctor in Fine Arts of the University La Laguna (Tenerife) and visiting professor in Prague and in different Chinese towns.
